What Are You Burning?

Think burning that wrapping paper is a good idea?  It is so not.  Combustion is happening in your living room after all, so you want to make sure you’re choosing what you’re burning, wisely.
Seasoned firewood will help your woodstove or fireplace burn cleaner and more efficiently. Green or wet wood can cause smoking problems, odor problems, rapid creosote buildup and possibly even hazardous chimney fires.
All firewood contains water. Freshly cut wood can be up to 45% water, while Seasoned Firewood is easier to start, produces more heat, and burns cleaner. The important thing to remember is that the water must be gone before the wood will burn. If you store your wood properly, generally 6 months-1 year storage time will do the job for free and turn your “Fresh-cut Wood” into “Seasoned Firewood”.
Properly starting your fire is also just as important.  Most fireplaces tend to have a natural downdraft so be sure to prime the flue first and create an updraft before you light the wood.  This can be done by burning a rolled piece of news paper up in the damper area.
