The removal of chimneys is gaining in popularity. Heating equipment can now be direct vented out the side of the house, so a lot of these orphaned chimneys can then be removed down the exterior of the house or through the middle of the home.  Chimney removals can be an invasive project depending on access, but when done as part of a home renovation project, can provide additional square footage for your newly designed space.
