What is a Smoke Chamber?

The smoke chamber is the area above the fireplace firebox (where you build your fire) just below the flue.
This space is used to allow smoke to mix and curl in a circular motion and rise into the flue. The purpose of the smoke chamber is to compress the byproducts of combustion into a smaller space (the flue inside the chimney) without causing back draft.smoke chamber
The use of angled walls in conjunction with good fireplace design and maintenance helps facilitate this.
Smoke chambers come in all different sizes and should be properly proportioned in relation to the size of the firebox and flue.
If the ratio is off, it can cause major smoke issues.

Next week we’ll talk about why your smoke chamber may need repair, and the importance of upkeep.
