Save on energy cost, install a top-sealing damper!
 
Air conditioning weather is right around the corner (hard to imagine, I know), you may not be thinking about your fireplace now that the burning season is over, but you might want to consider sealing off that fireplace so you don’t lose precious cool air in the hot summer.

A top-sealing damper is a damper that sits on top of the chimney opposed to the conventional damper that sits above the firebox.  Because they sit so far away from the fire source, they are designed with a rubber gasket that tightly seals your fireplace when it is not in use, keeping the weather elements and unwanted guests out.   These dampers are easily operational and seal tightly every time you close it, eliminating any unwanted expulsion of air conditioning through the top of your chimney.
A top sealing damper is easy to use and is designed to be smoothly opened and closed with a wire cable. You simply pull the damper handle down slightly and release, allowing the lug to pull up and hang freely about 4″ above the bracket.  When you want to close the damper you pull the handle down and attach it back onto the bracket and release.
