What is Pointing?

Pointing is when you grind out about 1/4″ to a 1/2″ of the mortar in between the brick and fill it back in with new mortar.

Pointing is important because the lifespan of mortar is about 25 years, whereas the lifespan of brick can exceed 100 years depending on the outside elements.

Pointing is significantly less expensive than rebuilding, however, once the mortar joint has deteriorated to a 1/4″ and the brick have shifted, it may be too late for repair. Grinding out the joints when they start to spall, can save thousands of dollars and add 10-20+ years of life to the chimney structure.
