Chimney Obstructions

A chimney liner is defined as a clay, ceramic, or metal conduit installed inside of a chimney flue.  Why?  To contain the combustion of the appliance(s) or fireplace venting through that flue and to ensure smoke and gasses are carried up and out instead of escaping back into the living area.   Here in Boston we come across a lot of clay tile lined or unlined flues because of the era our historic city was built.  What you may not know is that clay tiles tend to crack and break over time just like masonry/brick work does if it’s not properly maintained.  When clay tiles or brick crack and break, it can cause an obstruction inside the flue.  An obstruction will prevents passage or progress on the intended exhaust.

Yikes!

It is extremely important to have your chimney flue(s) checked on a yearly basis to be sure that there are no chimney obstructions present.
